3R Buddy Group - December 12, 2011

                                                               December 12, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...4 seconds.  A simple 4 seconds, almost a blink of an eye.
I was watching the recap of the Ironman competition that took place this past October in Hawaii.  I don’t know who the athlete was, but she crossed the finish line 4 seconds after closing.  You see, you have 17 hours to finish the 2.4 mile swim, 120 mile bike, and the 26.2 mile marathon.  And the young lady did the race in 17 hours and 4 seconds.  She won’t be called an Ironman that day.  We sometimes get mad, angry, disgusted with our times when we run the local races, but the heartbeat that separated her from the ultimate conquest can be measure in ‘the agony of defeat’.

RAVE RUN…
This isn’t so much of a rave run, but a story of what not to do.  As runners, we like to follow all the rules for preparing ourselves for races.  We train properly, eat properly, and taper properly.  We listen to our bodies carefully so as to keep injuries to a minimum.  A few years ago, I was training for the San Diego Marathon.  A few weeks before the marathon, I ran the Literacy Council Half-Marathon as a training run leading to the full marathon.  The night before the half-marathon, I ate about a half a bag of Mrs Fishers potato chips along with French onion dip as my prerace meal.  I probably gained an extra few pounds because of the water alone that I retain because of the salt from the chips.  I ran the half-marathon without any trouble and my time wasn’t too bad.  I sometimes think how much better I could have run, had I didn’t down a bag of chips the night before.  But, you’re supposed to try different things during your training, right?.  So, by the time it was marathon time, I didn’t eat a bag of chips the night before.  I stayed with the tried and true pasta.  Disclaimer: don’t try this at home.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

Ms Scubie wanted to remind you that there is a race this weekend at Rock Cut State Park.  It starts from the Olsen Beach parking lot at noon on Saturday.  I believe it’s a 5K.  And she wanted me to mention that she may take a fun class at Rock Valley College.

With winter having arrived, I can tell there’s going to be an abundance of clams this season.  Over the next few months, we’ll be deluged with a lot of different types of weather, rain, snow, ice, cold temperatures, low wind chill temps.  As always, if you’re not comfortable to come out for a particular run, please stay indoors.  We want you around for next year’s racing season.
And, there may be a few days when I won’t make it to a run because of inclement weather.  So, plan your running accordingly.
(Clam: my term for someone who stays in bed on a Saturday morning because it’s cold and snowy.  These folks peak their heads out from the blanket only to find the weather isn’t to their liking and throw the blanket back over their heads, kinda like what a clam does.)

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Snow, rain, cold temps.

Rockford Half-Marathon next May…
The date is May 20th, 2012.
Training starts the end of February.
Registration prices go up the end of the year.  And If you’re a past runner of the events, I have the top secret password to give you $10 off the registration fee.
A comment for the newbies:  If I mention a distance like the half-marathon, not all of us will be training for that.  So, the distances I mention are only for the distance demons, not us mortals.  Most of us will keep our run distances a lot shorter than what’s required for the half-marathon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t forget, the Crazy Legs race next April is on the calendar.
The date is April 28th, 2012.  Registration opens after the first of the year.  I’ll keep you posted.

Most everyone in the group must have been naughty this year.  I only heard from a few of you about your Santa wish list?  Let me know what you want under your tree?  Time is running out.  The jolly elf is coming in less than two weeks.
And finally, as father time passes into the New Year, what are your New Year’s resolutions for the next new year?
Ignoring my plea for this information will make me improve my writing skills.  I love great, wild fiction.  It won’t be pretty.
As always, the innocent will be safe.  If I embellish, I’ll include names.  So the choice is yours.

Remember, the BG is on Facebook.  The link to the group now is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/3R-Buddy-Group/113136022536
The dates and activities for the next month or so should be out there.  So, look for some information there.  And go ahead and write on the wall.  Let others know about your running adventures.

If you want to share any ideas for a run or recovery; if you'll be venturing to a distant race and you want to car-pool with some folks; or if you're training for a race and you want a training partner, pass the information onto me and I'll send the word out to others.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, 12.15.11, Meet at Martin Park in Loves Park.  We’ll run either north or south along the bike path (depends on the condition of the path).  Recovery is at Nunzio’s on North Second Street.  Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Saturday, 12.17.11, Meet at Peak Fitness on Perryville Road.  We’ll run the bike path towards Rock Cut State Park.  Meeting time is 7:00 am.
Thursday, 12.22.11, The Buddy Group’s Annual Christmas Party.  I’ll host the party.  If you want to bring a dish to pass (desserts, we need desserts), please drop me a note.  We’ll still run before the festivities start, so you don’t get off the hook that easy.  I live near the Home Depot on State Street so there are plenty of paths around for us to run.  This is a BYOLL (bring your own liquid libations) event.  For entertainment: we’ll watch the movie “Run Fatboy Run” about a runner who trains and runs the London Marathon.  Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Saturday, 12.24.11, Christmas Eve.  Does anyone want to run?
