3R Buddy Group - December 26, 2011

                                                               December 26, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...The sad thing about Christmas is when it’s over, a lot of hype for such a short time of festivities.  Now, we’re suffering from PSCS, Post Santa Claus Syndrome.  Thank God, Ground Hog’s day is coming.
I hope everyone had a great holiday.  Now, it’s time to get moving and lose the additional weight we put on throughout the season.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
I don’t have a rave run report, but I think the jolly elf from the North Pole has been picking up on my emails and more importantly, the RAVE RUN sideline.  Santa gave me a new red iPod-Nano for Christmas with the engraving “RAVE RUN” on the back of it.  I have friends in very high places.
I hope everyone had a great time last Thursday at the annual Christmas Party.  I want to mention that running pays off.  After running the London Marathon and receiving all the attention that he did, Dennis went on to become a member of the IMF team and is now in the movie: ‘Mission Impossible’.  As I’ve been saying, running pays off.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, the New Year starts soon.  And with it, comes all the resolutions that we start (or carry over from last year).  New Year’s resolutions were created by the Romans when the god Janus was placed at the head of the calendar.  Janus was a two-headed god, one to look past and one to look forward.  Thus the month of January, named after Janus.
Below are some New Year’s resolutions that came across my desk.
Improve my speed - (set new 5k and half marathon PRs).  And, figure out everything about my watch - the fancy pants Garmin forerunner 405cx.
My wish is to have a baby… or at least get pregnant with one =)
As for me, I’ll look back from my resolutions from a year ago and put them in this year.  I figure sooner or later, I’ll get them done or drop them.  I’m committed to running the Rockford Half-Marathon, so I want to do a good job with it.  I want to get caught up on all of my reading from this year.  Maybe one of my resolutions should be, not to buy a book when I have so many unread.
-----
I thought I’d go back and look for the resolutions some of us made a year ago.  I’m curious, how many of these were kept….
I usually don't do NY's resolutions but I feel the need to do one.  Lose weight (lifestyle change), train better, run with the group, more ME time (not that I have some now) and enjoy life!
My new years resolutions are to learn to enjoy the small & seemingly insignificant moments with my family - sometimes those are the moments that make the best memories.  Also, to make it to more buddy runs and increase my speed.
Next year, my resolutions is to conquer the LA Marathon in March by actually listening to my body during the training and realizing that a cup of coffee is not a suitable post-run recovery food.
New Years Resolution for me is to put my best effort into finding a new job in Madison or Milwaukee. I'm dying to move!!!!
As for me, my resolution is to make sure my feet hit the ground every morning when I get out of bed.  Knowing that I’m up and taking nourishment (thanks Bob) is the start to any great day.  The rest as they say, is just frosting.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
It’s winter.  And I think da Mudda is cooperating with us.  It’s supposed to be cold and snowy.  But in looking over the 10 day forecast, we’re going to be above freezing which isn’t too bad for running.
Everyone (most everyone) wants a white Christmas.  Now that Christmas is over, we want warm weather and it looks like we’ll get it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rockford Half-Marathon next May…
The date is May 20th, 2012.
Training starts the end of February.
Last week for the cheap registration.  Prices go up Sunday.
I’m having a short note placed in the Rockford Roadrunners newsletter asking if anyone wants to train for the half-marathon.  So, we may be getting a few more folks to enjoy the journey.  The more, the merrier.
And just because my notes will reflect the training for the half-marathon, not everyone who shows up for a run is running the half-marathon.  So, come on down for a run at whatever your pace and/or distance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t forget, the Crazy Legs race next April is on the calendar.
The date is April 28th, 2012.  Registration opens after the first of the year.  I’ll keep you posted.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, 12.29.11, Meet at Pino’s on North Main Street.  We’ll run towards the river, crossing the river to connect with the bike path.  It appears the weather is going to cooperate.  So, a run from Pino’s is on.  Recovery is at Pino’s on North Main.  Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Saturday, 12.31.11, New Year’s Eve.  Meet at corners of State and Madison Streets in downtown Rockford.  We’ll run the bike path along the river.  Meeting time is 7:00 am.  (Yes, exercise before partying.)

Thursday, 01.05.12, Meet at Gerry’s Pizza on East State Street.  We’ll run the bike path over to Midway Village for a couple of laps.  Recovery is at Gerry’s.  Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

3R Buddy Group - December 19, 2011

                                                               December 19, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...You know, before this week closes, the days will start getting longer.  And before you know it, warm weather will be here.
As we go into the Christmas week, I hope everyone has a great holiday.  I hope that Santa brings everything you want (see below for some ideas) and that you spend some relaxing time with family and friends.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…

Here are some BG’ers running in Sinnissippi Park and the Festival of Lights.

Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s Christmas time and below are some of the items folks have asked Santa to place under their trees this holiday season.
For Christmas, I would love for Santa to bring me a Stand Up Paddleboard, or at least a hot pair of boots.
Chewbacca wants a portable locker room so he can change out of his running clothes after a hard run.  Yeah, watching him change while drinking coffee on Saturday mornings, was quite a sight.
Ms Happy wants to publish her book “Making Money Running as a Bandit” next year.  She’s hoping to go on a book publishing tour with stops at all the major racing events, some of which she’ll be running in.  She also wants to partner with Robin Leach and produce a TV program “Lifestyles of Running Bandits”.
Ms Kittie wants a Garmin Nuvi so that she won’t get lost while on a run.  Unfortunately for her, the voice will still remind her to ‘turn left at the water tower’.
BtE wants a subscription to “Pizza of the Month” club.
Not to be outdone, Ms Cali Chick wants a subscription to the “Apple Cider Donut of the Day” club.
Ms Smartie Car got her present a little early.  U.S. troops final left Iraq.  (Amen!)
Ms RN wants RN school to be over.  She’s also asked for a free autographed copy of my new book “Hi Folks: My Emails to the Buddy Group and other Musings”.  It comes out in the spring.  Order your copy today!  She also mentioned something about a larger refrigerator door.
Ms Scubie’s list was too long to put in this email.  The jolly elf is really looking over her list and trying to determine if she’s been naughty or nice.
Mr Kansas City wants a better qualifying time for Boston.
Abbey, the pup, wants to run and has asked Santa to make her dad healthy enough to run.
Ms Speedo wants the book “1001 Excuses to Tell a Police Officer Why You Were Speeding” written by the Sherriff, a member of the BG.  Also, I think Ms Speedo wants to take lessons on “How to tear up and tell a sob story when approached by a police officer”.  Classes start January 9th, 2012.
The Sherriff wants another quota buster plaque in 2012.  She wants to keep her track record intact.
The Sherriff’s mom wants to meet earlier on Saturdays.  I think Santa will kick this one back to me.
As for me, I’m greedy.  I want two things.  I’ve asked Santa for lights on the path at Midway Village.  I think having a lighted path will do wonders for that area and the people of the east side who constantly use the path.  Perhaps the Park District can use some of their $30,000,000 windfall they’re putting into SportsCore II to help with the lights.  But, I’m afraid the folks of the Park District and the Midway Village Board have been naughty this past year.  We won’t be seeing lights at Midway Village anytime soon.
And the other thing I’m asking Santa for: I hope a runner of the group will complete a major running feat, goal, milestone next year; a runner to try something they’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage to attempt.  This is what our group and my emails are all about.  Helping runners do something they never thought they could.  And I may add, having us make it look simple.
(fine print:  All of the above characters and information are fictional.  Wink wink)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Snow, rain, cold temps.  It’s winter.
Except, I think the Hippy Dippy Weatherman lied to us.  The weather has been great so far this season.  But da Mudda will be playing jokes on us soon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rockford Half-Marathon next May…
The date is May 20th, 2012.
Training starts the end of February.
Registration prices go up the end of the year.  And If you’re a past runner of the events, I have the top secret password to give you $10 off the registration fee.
A comment for the newbies:  If I mention a distance like the half-marathon, not all of us will be training for that.  So, the distances I mention are only for the distance demons, not us mortals.  Most of us will keep our run distances a lot shorter than what’s required for the half-marathon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t forget, the Crazy Legs race next April is on the calendar.
The date is April 28th, 2012.  Registration opens after the first of the year.  I’ll keep you posted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last call for your New Year’s resolutions.  Send me something.  The creative part of my brain is slowing down.
As always, the innocent will be safe.  If I embellish, I’ll include names.  So the choice is yours.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, 12.22.11, The Buddy Group’s Annual Christmas Party.  I’ll host the party.  If you want to bring a dish to pass (desserts, we need desserts), please drop me a note.  We’ll still run before the festivities start, so you don’t get off the hook that easy.  My address is: 6796 Oxtail Court, Rockford, IL.  It’s the subdivision across Guilford Road from Midway Village.  Call me at 815-222-1280 if you need directions.  This is a BYOLL (bring your own liquid libations) event.  For entertainment: we’ll watch the movie “Run Fatboy Run” about a runner who trains and runs the La Flora Marathon (London).  Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Saturday, 12.24.11, Christmas Eve.  Does anyone want to run?  It was discussed at Thursday’s recovery that we can meet later ie 10:00 am, at Old Chicago near Logli’s on East State Street, run towards Midway Village and enjoy recovery at Old Chicago.  Let me know and I’ll send out a blue letter.

Thursday, 12.29.11, Meet at Pino’s on North Main Street.  We’ll run towards the river, crossing the river to connect with the bike path.  This will depend on the weather, so stay tuned to your email box.  Recovery is at Pino’s on North Main.  Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

3R Buddy Group - December 12, 2011

                                                               December 12, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...4 seconds.  A simple 4 seconds, almost a blink of an eye.
I was watching the recap of the Ironman competition that took place this past October in Hawaii.  I don’t know who the athlete was, but she crossed the finish line 4 seconds after closing.  You see, you have 17 hours to finish the 2.4 mile swim, 120 mile bike, and the 26.2 mile marathon.  And the young lady did the race in 17 hours and 4 seconds.  She won’t be called an Ironman that day.  We sometimes get mad, angry, disgusted with our times when we run the local races, but the heartbeat that separated her from the ultimate conquest can be measure in ‘the agony of defeat’.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
This isn’t so much of a rave run, but a story of what not to do.  As runners, we like to follow all the rules for preparing ourselves for races.  We train properly, eat properly, and taper properly.  We listen to our bodies carefully so as to keep injuries to a minimum.  A few years ago, I was training for the San Diego Marathon.  A few weeks before the marathon, I ran the Literacy Council Half-Marathon as a training run leading to the full marathon.  The night before the half-marathon, I ate about a half a bag of Mrs Fishers potato chips along with French onion dip as my prerace meal.  I probably gained an extra few pounds because of the water alone that I retain because of the salt from the chips.  I ran the half-marathon without any trouble and my time wasn’t too bad.  I sometimes think how much better I could have run, had I didn’t down a bag of chips the night before.  But, you’re supposed to try different things during your training, right?.  So, by the time it was marathon time, I didn’t eat a bag of chips the night before.  I stayed with the tried and true pasta.  Disclaimer: don’t try this at home.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ms Scubie wanted to remind you that there is a race this weekend at Rock Cut State Park.  It starts from the Olsen Beach parking lot at noon on Saturday.  I believe it’s a 5K.  And she wanted me to mention that she may take a fun class at Rock Valley College.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With winter having arrived, I can tell there’s going to be an abundance of clams this season.  Over the next few months, we’ll be deluged with a lot of different types of weather, rain, snow, ice, cold temperatures, low wind chill temps.  As always, if you’re not comfortable to come out for a particular run, please stay indoors.  We want you around for next year’s racing season.
And, there may be a few days when I won’t make it to a run because of inclement weather.  So, plan your running accordingly.
(Clam: my term for someone who stays in bed on a Saturday morning because it’s cold and snowy.  These folks peak their heads out from the blanket only to find the weather isn’t to their liking and throw the blanket back over their heads, kinda like what a clam does.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Snow, rain, cold temps.

Most everyone in the group must have been naughty this year.  I only heard from a few of you about your Santa wish list?  Let me know what you want under your tree?  Time is running out.  The jolly elf is coming in less than two weeks.
And finally, as father time passes into the New Year, what are your New Year’s resolutions for the next new year?
Ignoring my plea for this information will make me improve my writing skills.  I love great, wild fiction.  It won’t be pretty.

3R Buddy Group - December 5, 2011

                                                                December 5, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...Walking around Chicago on Saturday brought back memories of the Chicago Marathon.  Less than 2 months before the 2012 Chicago Marathon registration opens.  Contemplation!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week Thursday, we had a visitor from North Carolina run with us.  She was in town visiting family, dropped me a note asking about running groups and decided to join ours.
The Buddy Group is open to any and everyone.  If friends are in town and want to run with us on a Thursday or Saturday (Suite: Judy Blue Eyes), have them join us.  The more the merrier and the best part…it’s free and we’re slow.  (Er some of us are slow.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Now that the snow and cold weather are here, watch for ice on the paths.  I ran Midway Village on Friday and there were a couple of slick spots.  Slipping on ice and crashing to the ground can play havoc on your training.  So, just a heads up and watch for ice on the paths.
Also, the temperatures have been pretty mild.  It will take you a few weeks to become acclimated to the cold temps once they get here.  So, don’t worry, you’ll eventually get use to the cold weather.

Sorry, Santa won’t deliver a BQ time.  But, he can deliver hope that you can work toward a BQ time.
And finally, as father time passes into the New Year, what are your New Year’s resolutions for the next new year?
Before you ignore my need for this information, I know enough about a few of you to make my writing skills go wild, ok embellish.  So, make it safe and easy and let me know your stuff.

3R Buddy Group - November 21, 2011

                                                               November 21, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Day.  It’s time for friends and family.
I have just one word of caution.  On average, Americans gain 10 pounds over the holiday season.  So, even though the holiday season can be stressful and crazy, take time for a run.  And if you go for that extra run, you can enjoy that piece of pumpkin pie.
And finally, I know this is at the last minute, but I hope everyone has a warm, comfortable place they can visit on Thursday.  If you’re looking for some warm faces and a great dinner, you can always come with me and my family.  One or two more plates won’t make much a difference when you’re feeding 20+ already.

RAVE RUN…
Hey Bruce, how was your run on Saturday?  Did you win your age group?  If I don’t get a report from you, I’ll make one up.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but snow is on the way…sooner or later.  We usually get our first significant snowfall around the first week of December.  So, start planning your winter attire.  A great, cheap alternative to popular add-on traction systems like Yak Trax is to add short sheet medal screws to a pair of old running shoes.  Add 14-16 or more, short sheet medal screws to the outside area of the soles of an old pair of shoes.  These will give you additional traction in the ice and snow.  You only wear them when you need them.  I’ve been doing this for a few years and I don’t have any problems.

Rockford Half-Marathon next May…
The date is May 20th, 2012.
If you know of anyone who may be interested in training for the half-marathon, let them know about our group.  So far, three of us have registered and about another 6 or 7 sitting on the fence.  With enough prodding, we can probably get them to join the festivities.
Now is a great time to get add to your base miles.  We’ll start the Higdon program training starts towards the end of February.
If you ran the Rockford Marathon or Half-Marathon in the past, you’re eligible for a $10 off coupon code.  That makes the registration fee for the half-marathon $35 before the end of the year.  I’m registered, why aren’t you?
A comment for the newbies:  If I mention a distance like the half-marathon, not all of us will be training for that.  So, the distances I mention are only for the distance demons, not us mortals.  Most of us will keep our run distances a lot shorter than what’s required for the half-marathon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t forget, the Crazy Legs race next April is on the calendar.
The date is April 28th, 2012.  Registration opens after the first of the year.  I’ll keep you posted.  Speedo is getting excited about the race despite the warnings of the hill (a single hill) on Observatory Drive.  Observatory Drive makes Edweena look like a snotty nosed kid.  So the challenge has been set.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember, since Thanksgiving is this Thursday, give me thoughts on what you’re thankful for so that I can compile them in the next email.
And, since Christmas will be here before you know it, what’s on your Santa wish list?  What do you want under your tree?
And finally, as father time passes into the new year, what are your New Year’s resolutions for the next new year?
Before you ignore my need for this information, I know enough about a few of you to make my writing skills go wild, ok embellish.  So, make it safe and easy and let me know your stuff.
As always, the innocent will be safe.  I won’t mention any names in the email.

Hi Folks,
Note to self...The squirrels at Blackhawk Springs Forest Preserve are very lucky as compared to the squirrels in my yard.  They have an unlimited food supply with all of the nut trees out there.  I don’t have any nut trees.  So the squirrels around my yard are going to be looking pretty bad toward the end of winter.

RAVE RUN…
At recovery last Thursday, we had entertainment.  Jake and the Blues performed in the restaurant.  He put on a pretty good show and had a few of us dancing in our seats.  The funny part…we made up over half his audience.  So he was a little disappointed when we left.
Saturday’s run started off with some cool temps.  But I was warmed within a half mile or so.  As I was running, I noticed mist rising from the river and it was coating the surrounding area with frost.
I also put Edweena to bed for her long winter’s nap (after she kicked my butt).  I figure, we’ll wake her next March or so.  That part of the park is closed in the winter and they don’t plow it.
I know it’s a few weeks away, but mark your calendars for our annual Festival of Lights run through Sinnissippi Park on December 1st.  It’s always a great run, scenery and the event will definitely get you in the Christmas spirit.  We still need a recovery place.  Carlyle’s?  Ideas?
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

Tyranena Half-Marathon Training:
Nothing new about Tyranena except at Thursday’s recovery, someone was suffering from P1/2MS (Post ½Marathon Syndrome).  It’s to be expected.  I’ll try to find a race for us to train for.  There’s the Cary Half-Marathon on March 18th, 2012.  Any takers?  It’s a very popular race.  And training starts…now.

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Watch for frost on the bridges.  I remember driving through Virginia and seeing the signs “Bridges Freeze First”.

Rockford Half-Marathon next May…
The date is May 20th, 2012.  Our training next spring will be geared towards the half-marathon.  And, since we allow anyone to run with us, I’ll put the word out to see if others from outside our group will want to join the fun.
Depending on the training program, First training starts in the middle of January and Higdon training starts towards the end of February.
A comment for the newbies:  Over the next few months, when I mention a distance like the half-marathon, not all of us will be training for that.  So, the distances I mention are only for the distance demons, not us mortals.  Most of us will keep our run distances a lot shorter then what’s required for the half-marathon.

It’s the holiday season.  So, over the next few weeks, I need information from you.  Good, solid, information.  As we approach Thanksgiving, please let me know what you’re thankful for so that I can compile a list for the newsletter.  Soon after that, comes Christmas.  So, if you were to write a letter to Santa, what would you ask for?  What do you want under your tree?  And finally, as father time passes into the new year, what are your wishes for the next new year?
And before you ignore my need for this information, I know enough about a few of you to make my writing skills go wild, ok embellish.  So, make it safe and easy and let me know your stuff.
