3R Buddy Group - Septmeber 26, 2011

                                                                      September 26, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...why do your jeans fit tighter in the fall?  Aren’t we supposed to lose weight over the summer?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
For those of you who missed the Saturday morning run, below is some of the great scenery that you missed.
Rock Cut.jpg

Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Free to good home…two tickets to the Rockford Symphony on October 15th.  It’s a ‘Pops’ night, i.e. not boring classical stuff.  We won’t be able to use them so if you’re interested in them, let me know.  And yes, they’re free.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyranena Half-Marathon Training:
We about 6 weeks away from the race.  By now, you should be in a good training pattern.  Remember to experiment with different types of gels and liquids during your long runs.  Now is the experimental time for stuff like this and not during the race itself.
FIRST program: Week 13 - The distances for the week are: Thursday is 8 miles and Saturday is 10 miles.
Higdon program: Week 7 – The distances for the week are: Thursday is 4.5 miles and Saturday is 7 miles.
I haven’t heard anything about the how registration is doing.  I’ll pass on any information when I get.
We’ll carpool to the race.  Since the race starts at 11:00am, we usually meet about 8:00 or so.
Here are a couple of website links that you may want to visit.  For more information about the races: http://www.tyranena.com/beerrun/website.htm.
Racecourse information can be found at:   http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/23903710.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman…
I’ll mention it again only because da Mudda hasn’t started her fall tree cleaning yet.  She’s late this year.  Use caution on your runs when the leaves start to fall.  The leaves can hide glass and other sharp objects and the leaves can get pretty slippery when wet.
And since it’s getting dark earlier, now is a good time to buy some lights to wear during your runs.  A headband headlight is lightweight and not very cumbersome.  They’re inexpensive from the local hardware stores.  (Unless you’re like Speedo and steal your spouse’s light.)  You may also want to pick up a strobe light to wear during night time runs.  It’s a great device to alert drivers of runners.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rockford Marathon next May…any takers?  If there are enough folks wanting to train for the marathon and half-marathon, I’ll gear next spring’s schedule toward them.  And I may open the training to other runners of the Rockford community.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some races on the BG calendar.  This is not an exhausting list of races, but just some that we discuss during recovery and that the BG will venture to.
Tyranena Half-Marathon, Lake Mills, November 5th.

If you have an idea for a race that you think the BG will enjoy, send it my way and we can discuss them at recovery.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I received an email today from the folks at Carlyle Brewing.  Apparently there was an armed robbery of someone outside of Carlyle’s.  The folks from Carlyle pointed out that the robbery wasn’t just outside the brewpub but in the parking ramp on State and Water Streets.  Yes, the parking ramp most of us use when we run from downtown on Thursday nights.
Here’s my point.  When we leave the recovery places, let’s leave in a group and make sure everyone gets to their car safely.  Since the cold weather is coming, we’ll probably head to Carlyle’s for recovery on a Thursday night.  And what happened last Friday could happen to anyone of us.  Let’s make sure that never happens.  Let’s stick together as we leave to head home.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, 09.29.11, Meet at Maciano’s on Perryville Road.  We’ll run through the streets towards Rock Valley College and run a few loops of the path there.  Recovery is at Maciano’s. Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Saturday, 09.31.11, Meet at the south parking lot of Machesney Park Mall, down by the Penny’s entrance.  We’ll head south to Sports Core Park.  The total distance should be about 6-9 miles. Meeting time is 7:00 am.
Thursday, 10.06.11, Meet at Martin Park in Loves Park.  We’ll head south of the park running towards downtown Rockford on the bike path.  Recovery is at Nunzio’s on North Second Street. Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Saturday, 10.08.11, Meet at the northwest corner of State and Madison Streets.  It’s a parking ramp Saturday.  The total distance is short, maybe 6 miles.  But running parking ramps are a great hill workout.  Meeting time is 7:00 am.

“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose & give your whole heart and soul to it.”     -Buddha
"Mexico City, 1968 - Out of the cold darkness he came.  John Stephen Akhwari,
of Tanzania, entered at the far end of the stadium, pain hobbling his every step, his
leg bloody and bandaged.  The winner of the Olympic marathon had been declared
over an hour earlier.  Only a few spectators remained.  But the lone runner passed
on.  As he cross the finish line, the small crowd roared out its appreciation.
Afterward, a reporter asked the runner why he had not retired from the race, since
he had no chance of winning.  He seemed confused by the question.  Finally, he
answered: "My country did not send me to Mexico City to start the race.  They
sent me to finish.""

"Don't attack a hill from the very bottom-it's bigger than you are!"     -Harry Groves, Penn State coach

3R Buddy Group - Septmeber 19, 2011

                                                                       September 19, 2011
Hi Folks,
Note to self...Is it just me or do others tear up when they hear the National Anthem?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
I received a couple of email responses from last week’s Youtube video.  Thank you.  I hoped it brought some inspiration to your running.
Over the weekend I watched part of last year’s Ironman competition on TV.  So, I searched Youtube for an appropriate video from the Ironman-run portion.
I’ve used the quote before and it goes something like, ‘crawl if you have to, but finish the damn race’.  This is so true with the video.  And as you watch the video, listen to the last words from the commentator.  It sums up the spirit of determination.
Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTn1v5TGK_w
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s and I’ll include the links in this email as well as your moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

Congratulations to Bruce the Elder and Dave for finishing in their respective marathons this past weekend.  Bruce the Elder visited Dayton Ohio on Saturday and got 5th in age division and Dave visited Batavia on Sunday finishing 6th in his age division.  Way to go!
And speaking of marathons, I received an email last week mentioning the registration for the Rockford Marathon and Half-Marathon is now open.  And someone on the Facebook page has thrown down the gauntlet for the race.
Any takers?  If there are enough folks wanting to train for the marathon and half-marathon, I’ll gear next spring’s schedule toward them.  And I may open the training to other runners of the Rockford community.  Training for the marathon starts January 1st and the half-marathon about 6 weeks later.

September 12, 2011

Hi Folks,
Note to self...Since we just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the attacks against the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the plane crash in Pennsylvania, do you remember where you were when this happened.  I was at the Grand Canyon and taking in one of Mother Nature’s best beauties.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
Call me old.  But lately I’ve been looking up videos on YouTube.  Yep, it’s only taking me 10 years to get out there.  There’s a lot of interesting stuff out there.  I came across a video from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the 400 meter finals.  Watch the video and tell me what you think.  Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZlXWp6vFdE
Send me your moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman…
I saw an article in the newspaper that mentioned, even though it’s getting chilly outside, the skeeters are still out in force.  And it appears the authorities found a case of West Nile Virus in the area.  So, keep the bug spray flowing.
Most folks think that fall is the best time of year with the changing of the trees and the beautiful fall colors.  But a word of caution.  With the falling leafs, be careful where you step.  There could be sharp objects such as glass under the fallen leafs that could cut into your shoes and feet.  A few years ago, a local runner step on glass that was hidden by leafs and cut into her foot and slicing through tendons.  She was off for a long time recuperating.
