Hi Folks,
Note to you, the readers...every once in a while I’ll receive an email from a newbie runner who’s a little hesitant about coming out and running with us. In my emails to you, I mention distances of upwards of 5 and 6 miles and sometimes longer. Or perhaps, they may be intimated by the pace we may keep in our runs. They feel they may not be fast enough for our group.
Let me assure you, we’ve all been there. Trust me. And some of us have been there a few times.
Let me try to ease some of your fears. We always run an out and back course. So, you run the distance which is comfortable to you. In some cases, the distance demons run out a little further before heading back. The paces of the group range anywhere from 9 minute miles to walkers. So, depending on your pace, you’ll just fall into a subgroup. Inevitably, the main group always split into a few subgroups, based on the pace and distance.
Take for instance last Thursday. There were a few groups of runners that formed from the main group. There were the speed demons and the walkers. There was a group that wanted to run a bit farther, so they ran Ethel, twice. Eventually we all came back together towards the end. And no one ran or walked by themselves. So it was safe as safe can be.
So, I hope this explains a bit about the group. If you’re hesitant about coming out for a run, visit us once and decide from there. Ask questions when you come out. I guarantee it, you’ll have fun.
And one last thing. Even though I mention recovery, you don’t need to stay for recovery. There are folks who come out and run with us and don’t stay for recovery.

RAVE RUN…

But you know, it doesn’t matter what you look like. As long as you’re having fun. Unless of course you’re the Cali Chick. In which case, it doesn’t matter how you run, as long as you look good crossing the finish line.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

I received this note about t-shirt quilts from a friend at church…
Hi, let me introduce myself, my name is Ramona McKee and I make quilts. Now you’re asking what does quilting makin’ have to do with runnin’? Well, let’s see if we can find something in common. Oh, I think I have it. How many of you collect t-shirts from your events? Where are those t-shirts? Do you still wear them often or are they stored in a drawer somewhere? Did you know that t-shirt quilts are a very popular way to use that collection and see it every day? If you think this is something you’re interested in doing with your t-shirt collection I can be reached at my email: mzmckee@sbcglobal.net. Contact me today for your own custom made quilt!

Two items I want to point out this week.
First, even though the temps are cool, make sure you drink plenty of liquids before, during, and after your runs. Even though you’re not sweating, your body is still releasing moisture which needs to be replenished.
Second, even though the temps are going up and the snow is melting, there can still be some slick spots on the paths especially in the early morning and night time hours when the sun has dropped. Think coats of ice can form with the melting of the snow and cause it to be slippery.

Rockford Half-Marathon next May…
The date is May 20th, 2012.
Training starts the week of February 27th.
Over the course of the spring, some of my email notes will reflect the training for the half-marathon. I understand, not everyone who reads my words of wisdom will be training for the half-marathon. (I also understand that not everyone reads my emails.) But, we practice a policy that we leave no runner behind. So, come on down for a run at whatever your pace and/or distance and I promise, they’ll be someone running or walking with you.

Crazy Legs…
The BG will be venturing to the Crazy Legs Classic 8K race in Madison on April 28th, 2012. Registration is now open. Walkers are welcomed to the race and the BG will be represented by several walkers. So, there’s no excuse for not showing up.

We’ll carpool to the race and we’ll have our Madison people find a spot for recovery after the race.
I’ve mentioned before, if you want to run the Chicago Marathon, but don’t want to run the 26 miles, run the 5 miles of the Crazy Legs Classic. The race attracts 30K (ish) runners and walkers and the race circuit is lines with tons of folks cheering you on. The best part…finishing on the 50 yard line of Camp Randall Stadium, home of the Wisconsin Badgers.

And this from Tonya, who’s looking for Arny volunteers. Sorry, you can’t have the mile 7 timer post. It’s already spoken for, unless you want to arm wrestle…
It’s that time of year again! I’m seeking volunteers for the Arny Johnson 10 M & 5K Runs to be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Harlem High School.
Yes. It’s Easter Weekend. We set a record a few years ago when the race coincided with Easter. 550 Runners!!
Thank you for volunteering in the past. It takes over 60 volunteers to make this race happen. We raised nearly $11,000 for Habitat for Humanity in 2011. We hope to do the same or better this year as we are increasing our home building from 5 to 6 houses.
If you can spare a few hours on April 7th, drop Tonya an email at: tonyathayer@rockfordhabitat.org. This is one race you don’t want to miss.

Remember, the BG is on Facebook. The link to the group now is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/3R-Buddy-Group/113136022536.
The dates and activities for the next month or so should be out there. So, look for some information there. And go ahead and write on the wall. Let others know about your running adventures.
